Lake Macquarie, known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant communities, is now facing a new challenge – climate change impacts in its western suburbs. The recent recommendation of the draft Teralba to Toronto Climate Resilience Plan by the Lake Macquarie City Council highlights the proactive approach needed to address climate-related hazards in the region. The plan focuses on enhancing resilience in lakeside suburbs like Teralba, Booragul, and Toronto, which are vulnerable to bushfires, flooding, and rising lake levels due to climate change.
Deputy Mayor Jack Antcliff emphasized the importance of preparing for the changing climate and its potential impacts on the north-western side of Lake Macquarie. While residents in these areas enjoy a unique lifestyle close to the lake and bushland, they are increasingly exposed to risks associated with climate change. Antcliff stressed the necessity of planning and implementing strategies to safeguard residents, the environment, and critical infrastructure from future climate-related challenges.
Aside from climate resilience initiatives, the Council also recommended the draft Child and Family Strategy 2025-2029 for public exhibition. This strategic plan aims to support the diverse needs of children and families across the city by offering tailored programs, activities, and events over the next four years. Additionally, the Community Environment Grants program approved funding for three projects, including St Luke’s Uniting Church Belmont Community Garden, Hunter Bird Observers Club, and The Groundswell Collective, totaling $10,253.
These developments underscore Lake Macquarie City Council’s commitment to enhancing community well-being, environmental sustainability, and preparedness for future challenges. By investing in climate resilience measures and supporting initiatives that benefit families and local organizations, the council is actively working to create a more resilient and inclusive community environment.
As the council continues its efforts to address climate change and promote community welfare, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to engage with the proposed plans and provide feedback during the public exhibition period. By collaborating with the community and implementing forward-thinking strategies, Lake Macquarie aims to navigate the complexities of climate change while fostering a thriving and resilient city for generations to come.
