In a recent decision by the Lake Macquarie City Council, a new seniors housing development has been given the green light in Lake Macquarie. The project, located at 39 Thompson Street in Belmont South, aims to cater to the needs of older residents in the area.
The endorsed proposal includes the construction of 32 independent living units spread across two residential flat buildings of varying heights. Additionally, the development will feature 43 car parking spaces, bike storage, communal areas, and landscaped surroundings, all aimed at enhancing the residents’ quality of life.
Furthermore, the council also approved the rezoning of 1 Progress Road in Mount Hutton, transitioning it from a low-density residential zone to a local center zone. This adjustment paves the way for the expansion of the current center through commercial development, considering its strategic location, accessibility, and minimal impact on biodiversity.
Mayor Adam Shultz highlighted the benefits of the new project, emphasizing its proximity to residential areas and excellent connectivity through public transport networks. The council also agreed to the demolition of structures at 63-71 Main Road in Boolaroo to make room for a three-story building catering to businesses, retail outlets, and childcare services, with underground parking levels.
Additionally, councillors proposed the public exhibition of the draft Teralba Reserve Plan of Management, a plan designed to conserve the heritage and values of the new public reserve at 66 Pitt Street. The plan aims to ensure that the site meets community needs while implementing appropriate management strategies. The reserve, which includes a playground and a historic cemetery, underscores the council’s commitment to preserving local heritage.
Looking ahead, a councillor workshop will precede the consideration of the Housing Diversity Planning Proposal at an upcoming council meeting in early 2025. This initiative reflects the council’s ongoing efforts to address the housing needs and diversity within the Lake Macquarie community.
As Lake Macquarie continues its development journey, these recent decisions underscore the council’s commitment to enhancing the livability and accessibility of the region for residents, particularly the senior population.
