Lake Macquarie – Where Nature and Adventure Flow Together.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Launches Housing Forum to Tackle Supply Concerns

Mayor Adam Shultz of Lake Macquarie is taking a proactive step to address the pressing issues surrounding housing supply and affordability in the region. In an effort to combat the ongoing housing crisis, Mayor Shultz plans to organize a Lake Macquarie Housing Forum early next year. The forum aims to bring together key stakeholders such as affordable housing providers, community organizations, the development industry, and government officials to devise solutions to the housing challenges faced by the community.

Recognizing the crucial role that local government plays in increasing housing supply, Mayor Shultz emphasizes the importance of strategic urban infill and making use of underutilized transport corridors. He highlights that boosting housing availability in the right areas is a top priority for Lake Macquarie, as the high costs of both renting and buying homes pose significant financial burdens on many residents. These challenges not only limit social mobility but also contribute to economic disparities and displacement within the community.

Mayor Shultz advocates for a collaborative approach, acknowledging the complexity of the housing affordability issue and the need for diverse strategies to address it effectively. By engaging various stakeholders and recognizing the multifaceted nature of the problem, the forum aims to identify actionable measures that will enable the residents of Lake Macquarie to thrive and establish long-lasting roots in the region.

In addition to the housing initiative, the Council also honored former Mayors and Councillors who have made significant contributions to Lake Macquarie over the past 25 years. These individuals were recognized for their dedicated service to the community, with accolades presented to John Kilpatrick AM, John Jenkins OAM, Alan Hunter, The Hon. Greg Piper, Mercia Buck OAM, Laurie Coghlan, and Wendy Harrison.

Mayor Shultz commended these former officials as Lake Macquarie luminaries, highlighting their long-standing commitment to the city’s progress and development. Their unwavering dedication and service have played a vital role in shaping the growth and prosperity of Lake Macquarie over the years.

As part of its ongoing initiatives, the Council also approved the revised Community Engagement Strategy and Community Participation Plan for 2024-2028. This framework outlines the processes through which stakeholders, groups, and individuals can contribute to the Council’s decision-making and long-term planning activities, ensuring that community voices are heard and incorporated into key decisions.
