In a recent Council meeting held by Lake Macquarie City Council, housing development emerged as a key focus, particularly catering to the needs of the community in Lake Macquarie.
The highlight of the meeting was the endorsement of a new seniors housing development at 39 Thompson Street, Belmont South. This development, consisting of independent living units spread across two residential flat buildings, aims to address the housing requirements of the over 55s demographic in the area.
Mayor Adam expressed enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing its significance in offering 32 independent living units along with essential amenities such as car parking spaces, communal areas, and landscaping to enhance the residents’ quality of life.
Additionally, the Council approved the rezoning of 1 Progress Road, Mount Hutton, paving the way for commercial development to expand the existing local center. The strategic location of this area, its accessibility via transport networks, and minimal environmental impact were highlighted as key factors driving this decision.
Furthermore, the green light was given for the demolition of structures at 63-71 Main Road, Boolaroo, to make room for a three-story building accommodating businesses, retail outlets, and childcare services, complete with basement car parking.
Councilors also discussed plans to exhibit the draft Teralba Reserve Plan of Management publicly, aiming to preserve the area’s heritage and cater to community needs effectively. This reserve, located at 66 Pitt Street, Teralba, features a playground and a historical cemetery.
Looking ahead, a Councillor workshop is scheduled to precede the consideration of the Housing Diversity Planning Proposal in early 2025, indicating a proactive approach towards addressing housing diversity in Lake Macquarie.
