In the wake of the administrative center fire incident in November, Lake Macquarie City Council has successfully secured temporary accommodation for its staff members. The former Ausgrid administration building on Douglas Street in Wallsend will serve as a temporary base for approximately 400 indoor workers over the next six months while repairs are being undertaken at the Speers Point location.
CEO Morven Cameron expressed gratitude for finding a suitable location within or near Lake Macquarie to accommodate the staff, highlighting the challenges in securing a furnished building of such capacity. The rental expenses for the temporary premises are fully covered by the Council’s insurance policy, ensuring no additional financial burden on ratepayers.
During this transitional period, the Customer Service Centre will operate from Speers Point Library for walk-in inquiries. Additionally, a third site at Hillsborough Road in Warners Bay will cater to the Mayor, Councillors, and serve as a venue for development application pre-lodgement meetings and engagements with key stakeholders.
Progress is underway in repairing the damages caused by the fire, which authorities are investigating as an alleged arson attack. CEO Morven Cameron commended the efforts of law enforcement in handling the case and acknowledged the staff’s adaptability to remote work arrangements. The Council extends its appreciation to the community for their patience and understanding amidst the disruption.
The relocation process commenced earlier this month, with all remaining staff from the administrative center scheduled to move into the temporary premises by February 17. The temporary arrangements aim to ensure the continuity of essential operations until the regular administrative center at Speers Point is fully operational once again.
