The vibrant city of Lake Macquarie is gearing up for an exciting event that celebrates art, craft, and creativity. The Museum of Art and Culture, nestled in this picturesque region, is set to host the much-anticipated Make and Create Week starting from Monday, 7th October. This event is part of a new program that aims to showcase the growing interest in DIY crafts, textiles, and maker activities among the community.
Make and Create Week will not only take place at the Museum of Art and Culture but will also extend to various locations such as Lake Mac Libraries branches and other art venues like yapang and the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima. Serving as a satellite event for the popular Sydney Craft Week, this initiative is expected to culminate in Maker-Con 24 at Windale Hub, bilyabayi, on 18th October. Maker-Con 24 promises to bring together makers, innovators, and STEM educators for a day filled with creativity and inspiration.
Jacqui Hemsley, the Manager of Arts, Culture, and Tourism at Lake Macquarie City Council, expressed the surge in interest in art and craft activities, especially during the challenging times of COVID-19 lockdowns. This heightened demand led to the establishment of a dedicated textiles and sewing area at Toronto Library, tirrabiyanba, by the Council to cater to the community’s creative needs.
The program features a range of engaging events suitable for individuals of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to seasoned crafters. Some of the scheduled events include a yarn swap, a DIY projector lamp workshop, a clay Christmas gnome workshop, a felted vessel workshop, and a textile taster workshop. Maker-Con 24 will feature esteemed guest speakers such as Shelley Wilson from Questacon, Peter Turner from Tribotix, and Dr. Luke Hespanol from the University of Sydney, offering workshops, talks, and a platform to explore creativity and innovation.
