Enhancing Literacy with Little Libraries in Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie City Council is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative, the Little Libraries program, aimed at enriching the reading experiences of preschoolers in the region. This NSW-first program is strategically designed to combat low literacy rates by providing access to an abundance of books and reading materials for preschool children.

In a concerted effort to uplift literacy standards, the program will be implemented in specific areas within Lake Macquarie, focusing on preschools situated in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Mayor Adam Shultz emphasized the program’s significance in improving literacy outcomes from early childhood onwards. The endeavor not only aims to boost academic achievements but also seeks to kindle children’s imagination, curiosity, and global awareness even at a tender age.

The program will initially benefit eight preschools in key locations like Morisset, Toronto, Edgeworth, among others, by equipping them with a curated collection of books linked to Lake Mac Libraries branches. Jacqui Hemsley, Council’s Manager of Arts, Culture, and Tourism, expressed plans to expand the program in collaboration with additional local preschools.

The overarching goal is to establish partnerships with businesses and sponsors to extend the reach of Little Libraries to all 70+ preschools across Lake Macquarie. By fostering a love for reading at an early stage, the initiative not only introduces children to the enchanting world of literature but also fosters connections between families, preschools, and the local library resources.

Council’s commitment to the program’s long-term success is evident through its plans to monitor NAPLAN literacy results in targeted areas over the next decade. While acknowledging that progress may not be immediate, the proactive approach adopted by Lake Macquarie City Council underscores the dedication to securing enduring benefits for the community’s youngest members and their families.
