Surf’s up in Lake Macquarie as a series of aquatic events secure funding from the City Council. At the latest Council meeting, 21 event applications received approval for financial support under the Event Funding Program 2025-2026. Among the notable events greenlit were Let’s Surf Lake Mac at Redhead Beach, the Youth Surfing National Battle at Caves and Hams Beach, the Lake Macquarie Max Adventure Race at Cam’s Wharf, Wangi New Year’s Eve fireworks, Lake Mac Run 2025, and Italian Festival Lago Di Mac.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz emphasized the importance of supporting community events, citing their role in stimulating local economies and fostering cultural vibrancy. He highlighted the significant economic impact generated by events funded in the previous year, with over 110,000 attendees contributing an estimated $7.6 million to the region.
Additionally, the Council approved ordinary rates for the upcoming financial year based on a 4.5% rate peg and the latest land valuations. A key development stemming from the Lake Macquarie Housing Forum held earlier in the year was the adoption of an Action Plan aimed at enhancing housing supply and affordability in the area.
The Housing Forum brought together various stakeholders, including government officials, industry experts, and community representatives, to formulate strategies addressing housing challenges. An amendment to the Housing Forum Report was passed, offering a 100% discount on social and affordable housing development contributions for the next two years.
Mayor Adam highlighted the importance of removing barriers to social and affordable housing development as a means to encourage such projects in Lake Macquarie. Furthermore, the Council is actively pursuing the transfer of registration for the Hunter Sports Centre to accommodate expanded services and facilities at the site.
The Council’s commitment to fostering community events and addressing housing needs reflects its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for residents in Lake Macquarie. By supporting grassroots initiatives and implementing strategic housing policies, the Council aims to create a vibrant and inclusive community environment.
As Lake Macquarie continues to evolve and grow, initiatives like the Event Funding Program and the Housing Forum Action Plan are instrumental in shaping the region’s future. By prioritizing community engagement and economic development, the Council is laying the groundwork for a prosperous and sustainable future for Lake Macquarie and its residents.
