Residents’ objections to the Black Rock Motor Resort development plans have been dismissed by the Lake Macquarie City Council. The $95 million project, located on a disused mining site on Rhondda Road in Wakefield, aims to provide a range of facilities for motor enthusiasts, including a driving circuit, restaurant, accommodation, and recreational areas. Despite claims from residents that the incorrect noise policy was applied during the approval process, the council stands by its decision to endorse the project.
The Hunter and Central Coast Joint Regional Planning Panel initially approved the Black Rock development in 2019, with the support of the Lake Macquarie City Council. Former Mayor Kay Fraser hailed the project as a significant addition to the region, emphasizing its unique offerings for motor sports enthusiasts. However, some locals, like Tim Cusack, have raised concerns over the use of the Noise Policy for Industry in the approval process, arguing that it does not adequately address the noise generated by motorsport activities at the resort.
In response to the residents’ objections, the council maintains that the Noise Policy for Industry was appropriately applied in assessing the Black Rock development. The resort’s managing director, Tony Palmer, clarified that the modified development application does not alter the core plans for the project but simply introduces a staged approach to construction. This phased construction strategy allows for a more manageable implementation of the various amenities and facilities at the resort.
Notably, the revised development application includes plans for a 5.4-kilometer track, 4WD experiences, mountain biking trails, and various driving activities catering to a wide range of vehicles, from entry-level cars to high-performance models. The staged construction will encompass different phases, such as the development of site entry, access roads, welcome center, and specific recreational areas.
While concerns persist among some residents regarding the long-term impact of the project on the local community, the council’s decision to uphold the approval stands firm. The Black Rock Motor Resort represents a significant investment in the region’s recreational infrastructure and is poised to offer a unique experience for motorsport enthusiasts in the area.
As the debate over the Black Rock development continues, the council’s adherence to the approved plans signals a commitment to fostering growth and innovation in Lake Macquarie. With the project set to enhance the region’s appeal to motorsport enthusiasts and provide a boost to the local economy, the ongoing discussions underscore the importance of balancing community interests with strategic development initiatives.
