Despite a recent setback in securing funding from the Federal Government for a new aquatic facility in Port Macquarie, the advocacy for Lake Macquarie’s aquatic center continues unwaveringly. The Port Macquarie Hastings Council’s application for a multimillion-dollar boost to support the aquatic facility’s development was unfortunately unsuccessful, leading to disappointment among community members.
Mayor Adam Roberts expressed his disappointment over the decision, emphasizing the project’s significance as one of the highest-priority strategic endeavors for the region. The proposed aquatic facility, part of Stage 1 development plans, includes various amenities such as a 50-meter outdoor pool, a 25-meter pool with a transparent roof, an indoor pool, gym, kiosk, and parking spaces.
Although the application for $13.6 million in Federal funding was denied, Mayor Roberts remains committed to pursuing alternative funding avenues with the support of the local council and Federal Member for Cowper, Hon Pat Conaghan MP. The project’s rejection highlighted the rigorous assessment criteria set by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts, despite the project’s deemed suitability.
Moving forward, Port Macquarie Hastings Council will explore additional funding options to ensure the continued planning and development of the Lake Macquarie Aquatic Centre. The community’s support and engagement remain pivotal in driving this essential project forward, aiming to enhance liveability and social cohesion within the region.
