Development in Lake Macquarie has surpassed $1 billion, marking a significant milestone for the region. Morisset, Boolaroo, Edgeworth, and Wyee Point stand out as prosperous suburbs within the area. The billion-dollar benchmark was achieved through the approval of 1,824 development applications and modifications by Lake Macquarie City Council during the 2024/25 financial year.
Among these suburbs, Morisset emerged as a hotspot, with a total value of approved DAs reaching $49.6 million. The council’s commitment to high-quality, sustainable development has fueled the city’s transition from a traditional industry-based economy to one focused on services, health, tourism, and innovation. This shift has not only spurred economic growth but also created employment opportunities for the younger population.
Director of Development Planning and Regulation, David Antcliff, emphasized the positive impact of streamlining processes, attributing the city’s growth and transformation to quicker approval times. Despite a slight decline in the number of DAs processed, Lake Macquarie remains a top LGA in the state, showcasing its resilience amid broader national trends.
South-west Lake Macquarie has emerged as a key growth area, with Morisset leading in the value of new DAs approved. Mayor Adam Shultz expressed optimism for the future, citing favorable interest rates and new council initiatives to attract investment. The region’s strong position and appeal to developers reflect its potential for continued growth and prosperity.
While challenges persist, such as the need to retain young talent and compete with larger cities, Lake Macquarie’s strategic approach to development bodes well for its long-term sustainability. By facilitating quality projects and enhancing investment incentives, the council aims to solidify the city’s reputation as a desirable location for both residents and businesses.
Looking ahead, the focus remains on maintaining momentum, fostering innovation, and creating a vibrant environment that supports ongoing development. As Lake Macquarie evolves into a hub for diverse industries and opportunities, its journey towards economic diversification and sustainable growth sets a promising course for the years to come.
