Pete Allaway, the Chief Operating Officer of the Regional and Outer Metropolitan Division at Transport for NSW, emphasized the interchange’s role in promoting public transport usage in the region. With Newcastle already embracing the light rail system, the new bus interchange is expected to further encourage sustainable transportation choices among residents and visitors.

Valentina Misevska, Chief Executive of the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation, highlighted the interchange’s contribution to creating a connected and vibrant city. By enhancing accessibility and mobility within Newcastle, the bus interchange is set to play a pivotal role in the city’s ongoing urban revitalization efforts as part of the broader Revitalising Newcastle program.

The bus interchange not only facilitates bus services but also offers pedestrian access between various key points, including the station concourse, Hunter Street, and Stewart Avenue. It will cater to a range of services, including Newcastle Transport’s Route 22 bus service, regional bus operators, coaches servicing neighboring areas like Port Stephens, western Lake Macquarie, the Mid North Coast, Cessnock, and even rail replacement services when needed.

Local MP Tim Crakanthorp welcomed the opening of the interchange, expressing optimism that improved transport integration would lead to increased patronage and reduced dependency on private vehicles. He stressed the importance of fostering a connected city through efficient public transport options, underscoring the need for sustained efforts to encourage a modal shift towards more sustainable travel choices.

As Newcastle continues to evolve and expand its public transport infrastructure, the bus interchange stands out as a critical component in enhancing the city’s connectivity and accessibility. By providing a seamless and efficient transport hub, it not only benefits commuters but also contributes to Newcastle’s overall urban development strategy, aligning with modern trends toward sustainable and integrated urban transport solutions.
