Local artists in Lake Macquarie have come together to contribute their talents to the annual Float Your Boat event, organized by the Lake Macquarie City Council. The event, set against the backdrop of a moonlit Lake Macquarie, will feature up to 18 illuminated artworks created by these artists. Angela Budden, one of the local artists, shared her inspiration behind her piece depicting a seagull stealing a hot chip, a scene that resonates with many who frequent the foreshores of Lake Macquarie.
The Float Your Boat extravaganza promises a visual spectacle with neon artworks lighting up the night sky. The event, a winter solstice tradition, will include live viewing sites at Toronto, Warners Bay, and Belmont foreshores, offering entertainment, music, food trucks, children’s activities, and more. Mayor Adam Shultz highlighted the festival’s family-friendly nature and encouraged everyone to experience the vibrant displays along the city’s waterways.
The flotilla will embark on its journey from Empire Marina at Marmong Point, touring various locations around Lake Macquarie before concluding at Wangi Wangi. The following night, the illuminated boats will navigate a route starting at Belmont Foreshore and passing through different points before returning to Empire Marina.
Empire Marina’s CEO, David Randall, expressed excitement about the community coming together for this event, celebrating creativity and local pride. The event sponsors, including Newcastle Permanent, have shown continued support for Float Your Boat, with the People’s Choice Award offering cash prizes for the most popular light display.
Newcastle Permanent’s Chief Distribution Officer, Paul Juergens, emphasized the bank’s commitment to supporting events that foster community spirit and creativity. The public attending the event can vote for their favorite artwork, with a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card. Mayor Adam will also award prizes in two categories based on the size of the displays.
