A housing forum in Lake Macquarie is set to address the pressing issue of housing affordability and stock shortage in the region. The event, scheduled for April 3 at Belmont 16s, will see the participation of key industry stakeholders, government officials, and experts aiming to brainstorm solutions and strategies to cater to the growing population demands.
Mayor Adam Shultz highlighted the expected population growth in Lake Macquarie, emphasizing the need for nearly 19,000 new homes over the next two decades. The forum intends to pave the way for future actions to tackle this challenge effectively by bringing together various players to expedite processes and overcome existing barriers.
Notably, significant growth areas in Lake Macquarie, such as the North West Catalyst Area and the city’s south-west precinct, have been earmarked for development. The south-west precinct, including Morisset and Cooranbong, has been identified as a crucial growth area in the Hunter Region and Central Coast by the NSW Government’s Hunter Regional Plan 2041.
The NSW Government has introduced reforms to promote low and mid-rise housing in well-serviced areas like Belmont and Boolaroo, following initiatives such as the Transport Oriented Development Program to enhance housing supply around train stations. The upcoming forum seeks to build on these efforts and foster constructive dialogues to ensure efficient and sustainable city growth.
Key industry representatives from development bodies, neighboring councils, housing providers, builders, government agencies, and financial organizations are expected to attend the Lake Macquarie Housing Forum. Their collective insights and collaborative efforts are crucial in addressing the housing challenges faced by the region.
NSW Planning Minister Paul Scully commended Lake Macquarie City Council for its support and proactive stance in housing development. Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley echoed the importance of preparing for Lake Macquarie’s anticipated growth, emphasizing the need for coordinated action across all levels of government to meet housing demands and ensure a sustainable future.
The forum presents a valuable platform for community engagement and policy discussions, offering an opportunity for stakeholders to voice their concerns and contribute to shaping a housing strategy that aligns with the region’s evolving needs. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the Lake Macquarie Housing Forum aims to chart a path towards a more inclusive and resilient housing landscape for the community.
