On the winter solstice night, Lake Macquarie was aglow with vibrant colors as the Float Your Boat flotilla set sail from Belmont to Warners Bay. The waters dazzled with neon purples, blues, pinks, oranges, and greens, creating a magical spectacle.
The event, known as Float Your Boat, has become a beloved tradition in Lake Macquarie, drawing crowds from near and far to witness the illuminated display on the longest night of the year in the southern hemisphere.
Boatie Steve Upton, a seasoned participant in the event, captured the Mayor’s Choice Award with his creative Fred Flintstone and Dino-themed boat design. His intricate and eye-catching creations have been a highlight of the event for years.
Preparations for the event are no small feat, with Upton dedicating nearly two weeks and around 2000 cable ties to transform his boat each year. His attention to detail and innovative designs never fail to impress both judges and spectators.
The tranquil weather during the event brought out droves of spectators along the waterfront, where they enjoyed fireside gatherings, parties, and even joined in by flashing lights from their own homes, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Empire Marina CEO and event organizer David Randall noted that this year’s Float Your Boat attracted the largest crowds in its eight-year history, with thousands flocking to the Toronto, Belmont, and Warners Bay foreshores to partake in the festivities.
Aside from the illuminated boats, the onshore activities included music, roaming performers, children’s entertainment, food trucks, and even fluorescent kayaks, providing a diverse range of experiences for attendees of all ages.
A standout moment was the Glowing Jelly Fish Parade at Warners Bay, showcasing a visually stunning display that added to the enchantment of the evening and further solidified Float Your Boat as a must-see event in the Lake Macquarie calendar.
Float Your Boat has not only become a popular winter attraction but also serves as a means to activate the city during its traditional off-peak period, bringing the community together in celebration of creativity and light during the darkest night of the year.
