The history of classic Riva launches dates back to 1842 when Pietro Riva initiated yacht building on Lake Iseo in Italy. However, it was Carlo Riva, his great-grandson, who revolutionized the industry with wooden-hulled speedboats in the 1950s and 1960s. Inspired by American yacht builder Chris-Craft, Carlo Riva integrated powerful engines into his designs, setting a new standard in luxury yachting.
One of the iconic Riva launches was the Tritone, the first twin-engine classic range yacht. With a production span from 1950 to 1966, the Tritone epitomized elegance and power. The Super Tritone, a rare and sought-after model, showcased Riva’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovation. Valued at €200,000-€300,000, the Super Tritone symbolized the pinnacle of Riva’s design excellence.
Carlo Riva’s dedication to excellence was evident in the creation of the Tritone Special for Achille Roncoroni, a prominent figure in Como. This bespoke 8.3-meter marvel, powered by high-performance Cadillac Eldorado V8 engines, exemplified luxury and speed. The Tritone Special’s unique features and exceptional performance made it a standout in the classic Riva lineup, reflecting Carlo Riva’s unwavering commitment to creating unique masterpieces.
The Aquarama series, including the Aquarama, Super Aquarama, and Aquarama Special, represented the epitome of classic Riva luxury. The Aquarama, with 288 units sold, and the Super Aquarama, with 203 units, captivated enthusiasts worldwide. The Aquarama’s timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship made it a symbol of sophistication and opulence in the yachting world.
The Aquarama auctioned at Mecum Auctions in 2011 for $975,000 marked the end of an era for classic wooden-hulled Rivas. As the last of its kind to be sold to the public, this Aquarama represented a rare opportunity to own a piece of yachting history. Its sale underscored the enduring allure of classic Riva launches and their timeless appeal to collectors and aficionados.
The introduction of the Aquariva by the Ferretti Group in 2001 signaled a new chapter in Riva’s legacy. Combining modern technology with classic design elements, the 11-meter Aquariva captured the essence of traditional Riva yachts while embracing contemporary innovations. The Aquariva’s seamless blend of tradition and innovation reflected Riva’s commitment to preserving its heritage while adapting to evolving industry trends.
The Rivamare, launched in 2016, represented a fusion of classic aesthetics and modern amenities. Boasting cutting-edge features such as underwater lighting, air conditioning, and a Seakeeper stabilizer, the Rivamare combined timeless elegance with state-of-the-art technology. As the newest addition to the Riva collection, the Rivamare exemplified Riva’s dedication to craftsmanship, innovation, and luxury.
