Lake Macquarie City Council has recently approved funding for a series of exciting events as part of the Event Funding Program for 2025-2026. The council gave the green light to 21 applications totaling $75,004 in the latest round of funding. Among the events set to receive support are Let’s Surf Lake Mac at Redhead Beach, the Youth Surfing National Battle at Caves and Hams Beach, the Lake Macquarie Max Adventure Race at Cam’s Wharf, Wangi New Year’s Eve fireworks, Lake Mac Run 2025, and the Italian Festival Lago Di Mac.
Mayor Adam Shultz emphasized the significance of supporting community events, stating that they play a vital role in boosting local economies, creating job opportunities, and enriching the cultural fabric of the region. In the previous year, Council’s events funding program backed 51 events, drawing over 110,000 attendees and generating an estimated economic impact of $7.6 million. Mayor Adam expressed pride in sponsoring grassroots events that promote community spirit and showcase Lake Macquarie.
In addition to event funding, Council also ratified ordinary rates for the upcoming financial year. These rates are based on the 4.5% rate peg set by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) for the 2025-2026 fiscal year and the most recent land valuations by the Valuer General. The Council also endorsed an action plan following the Lake Macquarie Housing Forum held in April, which focused on enhancing housing supply and affordability in the region.
The Housing Forum brought together various stakeholders, including government officials, industry experts, and community representatives, to discuss strategies for addressing housing challenges. The Action Plan resulting from the forum outlines policy suggestions, action steps, timelines, and responsibilities. Notably, Council approved a 100% discount on social and affordable housing development contributions for the next two years to incentivize such projects in Lake Macquarie.
Furthermore, Council is pursuing the transfer of registration for the Hunter Sports Centre to accommodate the facility’s expanded works and services.
