Residents of Lake Macquarie now have a new option for disposing of household problem waste with the opening of the Belmont North Community Recycling Centre (CRC) on Floraville Road. The centre will accept various items such as paints, oils, gas bottles, and batteries free of charge, making it easier for the community to responsibly dispose of these materials.
The project received funding from the Department Primary Industries and Regional Development as well as the NSW Environment Protection Authority. Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty, highlighted the importance of such facilities in reducing waste and protecting the environment, emphasizing the positive impact they can have on local communities.
Lake Macquarie Mayor, Adam Shultz, expressed his enthusiasm for the new CRC, stating that it will complement the existing facility at the Awaba Waste Management Facility. The success of the Awaba CRC in diverting problem waste from landfills underscores the importance of providing accessible recycling options for residents.
NSW EPA Executive Director, Alexandra Geddes, emphasized the significance of local waste solutions in addressing the landfill crisis facing the state. She highlighted the Belmont centre as a crucial resource for communities striving to reduce harmful materials in landfills and promote sustainability through recycling and reuse.
Member for Swansea, Yasmin Catley, praised the collaborative effort between the community and government in establishing the new recycling facility, emphasizing the role it plays in promoting sustainable living and environmental stewardship. The facility serves as a testament to the community’s commitment to responsible waste management.
Since its opening in 2014, the Awaba CRC has been instrumental in Lake Macquarie’s circular economy, recovering substantial amounts of paint, electronic waste, batteries, and other materials. The centre’s impact on waste diversion and recycling efforts highlights the effectiveness of such facilities in promoting environmental conservation.
The Belmont North CRC, operating on Floraville Road, offers convenient hours of operation throughout the week, providing residents with ample opportunities to drop off problem waste. The facility’s location and accessibility aim to encourage greater participation in recycling initiatives and reduce the environmental impact of household waste.
As the need for sustainable waste management solutions grows, the opening of the Belmont North CRC marks a significant step towards achieving a more environmentally conscious community. By providing a dedicated space for waste disposal and recycling, the facility promotes a culture of responsible consumption and environmental awareness among residents in Lake Macquarie.
