Aiming to gauge the liveability of Lake Macquarie, a biennial survey is currently underway to uncover the priorities of residents, businesses, and community organizations in the city. The 2025 Liveability Census seeks to survey a large number of people nationally over the next three months to identify areas that require more funding or attention.
Comparing responses from Lake Macquarie to nationwide results and similar LGAs across the country, the survey aims to provide insights into what matters most to the community. Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz expressed pride in supporting the Liveability Census every two years, emphasizing the importance of residents’ feedback in shaping the city’s future.
Results from the 2023 Liveability Census indicated that 81% of respondents were content with the liveability of their local neighborhoods in Lake Macquarie, with a strong emphasis on the natural environment as a top community value. In comparison to the national average, respondents in 2023 also positively viewed factors such as neighborhood safety, housing availability, and ease of parking and driving.
Key priorities highlighted in the survey included the need for attention to public open spaces and shared paths. Mayor Adam highlighted the city’s efforts in delivering projects like the Fernleigh Track extension and the Rathmines Youth Hub over the past two years, emphasizing the importance of tracking changes in people’s priorities and concerns over time.
Survey participants have the opportunity to win a $1000 shopping voucher or one of 40 $100 vouchers. The Australian Liveability Census, managed by Place Score, encourages respondents to complete the survey online to contribute to shaping Lake Macquarie’s future.
Reflecting on the historical context of community engagement and development initiatives, the Liveability Census stands as a significant tool for local governments to gather valuable insights and align resources with the needs and desires of residents.
