Physical Activity Innovator Wins Top Honour at Lake Mac Awards

A champion of physical activity has been recognized with the top honour at the Lake Mac Awards presented by the Lake Macquarie City Council. Dr. Alyce Barnes, a researcher from the University of Newcastle, has been named the Lake Mac Ambassador for 2025, succeeding the previous winner, Matt Hall. Dr. Barnes played a pivotal role in pioneering innovative physical activity initiatives, notably the Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered program. This program focuses on engaging fathers and their young daughters to encourage physical activity, develop sports skills, improve well-being, and strengthen father-daughter relationships.

Mayor Adam Shultz commended Dr. Barnes for her leadership in projects such as the Physical Activity for Everyone (PA4E1) program for local secondary schools and advocating for ‘physical activity-enabling’ school uniforms for girls. He emphasized her significant impact on the community through her dedication and commitment. Dr. Barnes expressed gratitude for the award, attributing her success to the collaborative efforts of researchers, educators, and communities striving to instigate positive change.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Newcastle, Professor Alex Zelinsky, praised Dr. Barnes for her unwavering commitment to enhancing community health and connectivity, particularly among young girls and families. The Lake Mac Awards, sponsored by Allambi Care and Avondale College, recognized various individuals and groups across 13 categories. Among the winners were Emma Walsh, named the 2025 Lake Mac Young Citizen of the Year for her charitable foundation supporting ill young people, and Lee Baines, honored as both the Lake Mac Volunteer of the Year and Senior of the Year for his exceptional service with Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie.

Another notable winner was The Groundswell Collective, acknowledged as the Lake Mac Environmental Leader for their environmental conservation efforts in the region. Luca Romeo, a talented musician known as Luca B Drums, was recognized as the Lake Mac Artist and Creator for his viral ‘extreme metal’ drumming performances. Mayor Adam applauded all the winners for their remarkable contributions, highlighting the diverse and selfless work undertaken in Lake Macquarie on a daily basis.

The Lake Mac Awards ceremony showcased the outstanding achievements of individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to the community. Dr. Alyce Barnes’ recognition as the Lake Mac Sports Leader underscores her pivotal role in promoting physical activity and well-being, reflecting her dedication to creating a more inclusive and active community for all.
